Northwestern football ranked No. 50 in all-time AP Top 100

In the first ever AP ranking of the top 100 all-time college football programs, Northwestern came in at No. 50.

Big Ten peer Ohio State topped the list, and Nebraska and Michigan clocked in at No. 6 and No. 7 respectively. Seven Big Ten programs made the list’s top 25, including Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa. Rutgers was the lowest ranked program from the conference at No. 86.

The ranking is based on a formula taking into account the AP’s rankings going back to the poll’s creation in 1936. Ohio State has appeared in more than 77 percent of all AP polls since the ranking’s inception and has topped the ranking 105 times. The Wildcats hold an all-time record of 14-60-1 against the Buckeyes.

NU finished last year ranked No. 23 in the AP poll having peaked at No. 12 before its bowl loss to Tennessee. The Cats landed ahead of academic peers such as Duke (No. 53), Boston College (No. 57) and Vanderbilt (No. 89) in the all-time ranking. They also finished one spot ahead of in-state rival Illinois.

NU kicks off its season Sep. 3 against against Western Michigan. The AP will release its preseason rankings on Aug. 21.

The Wildcats (26-25) beat Ohio State (33-18-1) in thrilling fashion on Friday, bringing in a tight 3-1 win after scoring three runs in the first frame. Although the Cats would not score any additional runs throughout the matchup, it was team’s defense that led the charge, guaranteeing that NU will finish with at least a .500 record to maintain eligibility for an NCAA Tournament at-large berth.

A fly-out from senior shortstop Andrea Filler in the first helped the Cats strike first, followed two batters later by a groundout from sophomore catcher Sammy Nettling for another RBI. Sophomore second baseman Brooke Marquez then smashed a double into centerfield to put the Cats up 3-0.

The Buckeyes’ Cammi Prantl would score OSU’s lone run in the fourth inning, but NU’s Kristen Wood and Amy Letourneau kept OSU’s batters at-bay for the rest of the matchup. Wood and Letourneau pitched more than three innings each, with only one run and five hits off both aces combined, and Letourneau earned the win in the 7th frame.

NU will advance to face the winner between Minnesota and Illinois in the semifinals.

Northwestern’s game at Ohio State on October 29 will be played at 5:30 p.m. eastern time and will be broadcast nationally on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, the Big Ten and ESPN announced Monday.

The Wildcats and Buckeyes last met on October 5, 2013 in Evanston, when ESPN’s College GameDay show visited campus for the first time since 1995. NU narrowly lost that game, 40-30, and went on to lose another six straight and finish the season 5-7.
