A busy weekend took place for Northwestern sports teams. Here’s what happened…

  • The lacrosse team made it to the Big Ten Tournament championship game but ultimately fell to Maryland.
  • Dan Waldman discusses how a big second-half run by the Terrapins ultimately sunk the Cats.
  • Despite the loss, the lacrosse team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will face Louisville in the first round on Friday.
  • Joe Wilkinson recaps a successful run for the women’s golf team, which won their NCAA Regional bracket by 18 strokes.
  • In September, the Northwestern football team will host two prime time games against Duke and Nebraska.
  • Former baseball captain Kyle Ruchim had his contract with the independent Schaumburg Boomers purchased by the Chicago White Sox.

Wednesday night was one Northwestern fans would probably like to forget. The baseball and softball teams each traveled to Chicago-based schools, UIC and DePaul respectively, and both lost in walkoff fashion.

Northwestern sports had a busy weekend. Let’s catch you up to speed…

  • Two Wildcats were drafted by NFL teams on Saturday. Dean Lowry was taken by the Green Bay Packers and Dan Vitale was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • Additionally, Deonte Gibson and Traveon Henry each signed as undrafted free agents, Gibson with the Detroit Lions and Henry with the Buccaneers.
  • Per coach Pat Fitzgerald on Twitter, wide receiver Miles Shuler and quarterback Zack Oliver were each invited to tryouts with NFL teams as well. Shuler will work out with the New York Giants while Oliver will get a shot with Washington.
  • Dan Waldman recapped a crucial win for the lacrosse, keeping the team eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
  • Benjy Apelbaum reviews a disappointing Big Ten Tournament loss for the men’s tennis team.
  • Mike Marut discusses the women’s tennis team falling in the Big Ten Tournament as well.
  • Bites from the weekend: Dean Lowry reacts to being drafted, Luke Donald visits Evanston, Selena Lasota notches hat trick

The Northwestern men’s and women’s tennis teams kick off their Big Ten Tournament matches today after they each received a bye in the first round. Purdue will face the men’s team at 2 p.m. today, while the women’s team takes on Michigan State at 1 p.m. Read the tournament previews from earlier this week here: Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis

  • Three Wildcats from the men’s tennis team were named first-team All-Big Ten.
